Firm In Receivership Wins Tug Contract
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, September 15. Whangarei Engineering and Construction, Ltd, a shipbuilding firm which went into the hands of a receiver, Mr D. L. Hazard, some months ago, has been awarded another contract, this time for three 108 ft hopper barges for the Napier Harbour Board.
No price has been disclosed but Mr Hazard says the contract will call for delivery of the barges in 10 months.
Since the receiver took over the company has completed a 95ft tug for the Auckland Harbour Board and has continued work on another 95ft tug for the Southland Harbour Board. The Southland tug is due for launching on September 26 and for delivery early in November.
A few weeks ago the company contracted to build a 67ft trawler for a Tauranga man.
Announcing the latest contract, Mr Hazard said: "Two or three weeks ago it looked as though the works would
have to partly close down. With the order for the trawler the pressure was eased. , “So far everything has been done by our own efforts but 1 am still hoping that the Government will have regard to my submissions for some rationalisation in the shipbuilding industry which will help us to look to continuity of work,” Mr Hazard said.
