Committee Vacant
(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Sept 15. The Bay of Islands County Council will have to appoint a full town committee for Paihia because no nominations for election have been received. But both the existing Paihia County Town Committee and the Paihia Ratepayers’ Association deny boycotting nominations for the coming local body elections.
Mr T. H. Wynne-Lewis, the chairman of the Ratepayers’ Association, said on Saturday that there was no question of a boycott by his association. Previously the association had nominated several people but this time it did not put forward any names.
Mr T. W. Reed, chairman of the existing town committee and riding member for Waitangi, said that to his knowledge there was no truth in rumours of a boy-
cott. The committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Bay of Islands County Council. Previously it has been elected by the ratepayers. but by statute there is provision for the county council to appoint members. The Bay of Islands County Chairman (Mr H. F. Miller) said the committee had done a “darned good job” and its successes of the past could be seen in the development of Paihia.
