Six qualified
rpHE swimming season does not start until October 1, but already six Canterbury competitors have broken national qualifying times, bringing them into line for the first New Zealand open championships. Besides Miss T. K. Shipston, whose deeds with the Olympic squad have put her
at the top of the. list four other national champions from Canterbury have bettered required times for the national meeting. Miss J. A. Wright has qualified in four events, Miss L. M. Smith in three, and A. B. Kindred and Miss C. J. Whiting in two each. As well, the promising breaststroke swimmer, Angela
Bunt, has qualified in one distance. The Elmwood all-rounder, G. S. Walker, is only O.lsec away from one mark and it should not be long before swimmers such as M. King, J. Tillson, Jocelyn Hay and Glenys Dacombe come into the reckoning. The indications are that Canterbury will be strongly
represented at the New Zealand title meeting and might even win as many gold medals as it did at New Plymouth last season.
