Olwyn Ann Picked

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND.

If Olwyn Ann has continued the improvement that brought her from tenth at Avondale to second at Rotorua last Saturday, she will be the hardest to beat in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the President’s Handicap, at Thames today.

Except for her failure In the Avondale Cup, Olwyn Ann had been racing well before she finished second at Rotorua. She had been sixth in a middle distance at Matamata and fifth in both the Whakatane Cup and the Taumarunui Gold Cup. In the La Trobe Hill Handicap, at Rotorua, Annie Laurie beat her narrowly. Perhaps a change to better going had something to do with Olwyn Ann's Improvement at Rotorua. It was at this time last year, when the ground began to firm, that she began a run of form that got her three successive wins on end.

From No. 2, Olwyn Ann should manage a good position before the first turn. Annie Laurie is wider at the start and she will be lucky if she Is not forced to cover extra ground. She promises to be hard to beat all the same. Annie Laurie came home gamely at Rotorua to win with a late run and her form beforehand was consistently good. It will be interesting to see whether Chief Warrior has the stamina to go a middle distance. This will be his first try, as far as a mile and a quarter. Other Prospects Chief Warrior and Mr Charlie are from C. A. Robinson’s stable at Matamata and will be bracketed on the totalisator. Chief Warrior finished second at his last attempt and Mr Charlie returned to racing with a good fifth over a mile at Avondale. Together they are certain to be well backed.

Head Fancy won so well over a mile at Avondale on Saturday that she will have to be considered also. The second leg, the Stewards’ Handicap: is another open race, with Bostock, Dasheen, Kurrewa, and Thundercloud among the probpects. Bostock W racing well and is due for another win. Kurrewa, a stablemate of Olwyn Ann, has more than ordinary ability and he might be up to a good six furlongs while fresh after a spell. The track will be easy.
