A Sailing Manual
The Pan Book of Sailing. By F. H. L. Searl. Pan Books. 192 pp. and appendices. Although this book was written primarily for the small-boat sailor in Britain, the information given applies equally well to sailing in New Zealand. The author. Group Captain Searl, is chief instructor at the Emsworth Sailing School. He offers simple and practical advice on choosing a boat and how to sail it, its care and maintenance, coastal navigation, how to read weather maps and tide-tables and so on. The tyro sailor who studies this excellent little book should avoid most of the embarrassing and sometimes dangerous traps which await the man who puts out knowing nothing of boats or the sea. >
