No Surprises In Local Body Lists

When Christchurch City Council electors go to the polls on October 12, they will have to try to make sense of 95 nominations for 51 seats on the council and the five on ad hoc local bodies.

Both Labour and Citizens have nominated full tickets for the 19 City Council seats, but there are only three independents standing, compared with 10 at the 1965 elections, which also drew four mayorhl candidates. There will be contests for the mayoralties of the boroughs of Riccarton, Lyttelton and Kaiapoi.

There were no surprises when nominations closed at noon yesterday. The city mayoralty will be contested by the announced candidates— Mr A. R. Guthrey, a sitting councillor who is the Citizens’ Association nominee, and Mr J. Matheson, M.P., who will stand for the Labour Party. Electors have two more issues than usual this year, as the Christchurch Transport Board and Christchurch Drainage Board polls, normally held a year later, will for the first time be held with the other elections on October 12.

Full party tickets have been nominated for the Harbour, Hospital, Drainage, Transport and Catchment Boards; but there are no independents. Among the City Council candidates is Mr E. B. E. Taylor, nominated by the Citizens’ Association. His father, Mr T. E. Taylor, was Mayor of Christchurch in May and June, 1911. OTHER COUNCILS

With the retirement of the Mayor of Riccarton, a sitting councillor, Mr R. W. J. Harrington, has been nominated by the Citizens’ Association for the position, and he will have a contest with Mr H. S. Cross, a nominee of the Residents’ Association. Both associations have nominated the full ticket of eight for the council.

Mr W. S. Tredinnick, a sitting Labour councillor, will contest the Lyttelton mayoralty with the sitting Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett), and the Labour Party and the Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association have each nominated a full ticket of nine for the council.

Interest in council affairs may be reflected in 12 nominations for the four Cashmere riding seats on the Heathcote County Council. Among them is Mr C. C. Steel, wno organised a petition seeking amalgamation with the city. A council driver, Mr J. T. A. Bettridge, and the County Engineer (Mr I. Calvert) will contest the Harewood riding seat on the Waimairi County Council, where the sitting councillor, Mr J. D. Ashby, is not seeking re-election. The county chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) is one of three councillors re-elected unopposed, as was Mr W. T. Rice, a former finance committee chairman, who was defeated at the 1965 election. He fills the Papanui riding seat of Mr M. P. Hobby, who is not standing. Mr J. A. Tully, a member of the Canterbury University Students’ Association executive, is contesting the Fendalton Riding against the sitting members, Messrs O. C. Mitchell and R. C. Neville, and Mr A. C. Richards, a prominent Federated Farmers’ member, is trying to oust Mr A. A. Adcock in the Styx Riding. Hospital Board Mr R. G. Armstrong, who previously announced that he would not seek re-election to the North Canterbury Hospital Board because of pressure of business, has allowed his name to go forward. He said yesterday that in view of the number of requests to him to stand, and changed business circumstances, he had decided to accept nomination.

He is one of five candidates contesting the board’s Waimairi County seat. There are six candidates for the county’s three Drainage Board seats, and four for the two seats on the Transport Board. Mr F. L. Wright, the sitting North Canterbury Catchment Board member for Waimairi and Paparua, is having his first election for many years, with two other contestants. Elections will be held in 11 of the 22 issues that could possibly have faced Paparua county electors. There will be contests in the Hornby, Broadfield, Halswell rural, Halswell county town and Tai Tapu ridings, but other councillors, including the chairman (Mr D. H. Warren) were re-elected unopposed. Because of a reshuffle of representation, two sitting members of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board, Mrs J. E. Woodham and Mr A. T. Stevenson, will be competing with two other candidates for the one Hornby seat. Mrs P. M. Zeff was elected unopposed to the Paparua County-Riccarton Borough seat on the North .Canterbury Hospital Board vacated by the retirement of Mr F. W. Gilbert. Outlying Counties Mr O. R. Chamberlain, for 24 years an Ellesmere County Council member, will retire, and Mr I. Mcßae was elected unopposed to the vacancy. The seat vacated by the retirement of Mr H. G. Chamberlain was filled by Mr R. L. E. Skilling. Only the chairman, Mr G. P. A. de Latour, was re-elected unopposed for the Akaroa County Council.
