Primary Schools Give Concert At Lincoln
The Lincoln High School Hall was filled on Thursday evening for the annual concert of the Lincoln District Primary Schools’ Music Association.
A massed choir of some 250 children from the Greenpark, Halswell, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston, Springston, South Hornby and Tai Tapu schools performed four brackets of songs delightfully. The conductor, Mr I. E. Cummins, obtained good tone and clear diction from the children who had been well prepared for these items. The choir was accompanied by Mrs D. Halliday, whose sensitive playing has been a feature of these festivals since they began some six years ago. The remainder of the programme was made up of items from the individual schools. The standard of these has risen steadily over the years and reflects the growth of school music in the area. Instrumental groups added variety and two schools were able to have children accompanying on the piano. One of
these played splendidly for both her school choir and orchestra. One reason for the success of the evening was the choice of songs. Generally these had strong rhythmic and melodic appeal, yet were not too difficult. Interest was added by the inclusion of descant and two-part songs. The chairman (Mr D. Halliday) thanked the teachers who had prepared and conducted the choirs, the pupils for their hard work and the parents for their interest and support. The enjoyment shared by both the children and audience made this a thoroughly entertaining and worthwhile evening.—B.K.G.
