LYTTELTON TRAINS
No Solution To Heating (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept 13. The problem of heating the carriages of the LytteltonChristchurch trains is as far from solution as ever, according to advice given in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon). Asked by the Loader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) what would be the cost of providing electric heating in the carriages, Mr Gordon said that it would cost $44,000 to equip the five electric locomotives and 18 carriages with electric heaters. Mr Kirk: Can the carriages be heated at the station? Mr Gordon: I doubt whether the 18 carriages used on the suburban run are piped for steam heating. The boat train carriages are so heated, but this is at considerable expense, and the beat does not last long.
