OBITUARY Deaconess P. H. Park
Deaconess Piata Hemi Park, who received the British Empire Medal this year for her services to the Church of England, died in Christchurch yesterday. She travelled frequently throughout the 30 parishes of the Christchurch diocese and after her retirement continued the healing missions in which she had been a pioneer. Miss Park graduated from Victoria College. Wellington, and was parish sister in Palmerston North from 1917 to 1925. She was head organiser for youth work and Sunday school work in tfie Christchurch diocese from 1926.
In 1983 she was ordained a deaconess by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. C. W. West-Watson). Miss Park initiated new teaching and training methods for Sunday schools, and at the request of the late Sir James Shelley, Director of Broadcasting, she was member of a panel to set a syllabus for instruction of children on Sunday afternoon broadcasts. Miss Park waa always active in hospital and institution visiting, and she began counselling progranimes among young women. For some time she had been ill and confined to St George’s Hospital.
