U.S. Reservists Gain Stay
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 13.
A judge of the United States Supreme Court, Mr Justice Douglas, yesterday temporarily blocked the shipment to Vietnam of 113 United States Army reservists who claim they were called up illegally, United Press International has reported. The order will give them time to appeal against a ruling on August 26 by the Fourth United States Circuit Court of Appeals. They are challenging a 1966 law which allows the President to order any reserve unit to active duty for two years—the reservists asserting that under earlier laws their contract with the Government contemplated active duty only in the event of a declared war, or a declared national emergency.
