Cardigan Bay Stamp?
When Cardigan Bay becomes the first standardbred horse in the world to win $1,000,000 in stakes, it is probable that his feat will be marked by the issue of a special stamp in New Zealand.
Trotting interests have made representations to the Department of Internal Affairs and to the PostmasterGeneral (Mr Scott), who has shown interest in the idea.
At present Cardigan Bay is some $7OOO short of his $1,000,000 goal. Recently he has been racing away from the main racecourses about New York city, but the one win in a race carrying a stake of $15,000 or more has escaped him. However, he has recorded placings and is gradually drawing closer to $1,000,000 with amounts of $lOOO to $2OOO for placings.
Cardigan Bay would become the first racehorse in New Zealand to be shown on a stamp. Such a stamp would emphasise New Zealand as a standard-bred nursery. This has long been recognised in Australia, but it is only in the last five years that an export market to the United States worth several million dollars a year has been developed.
