Gardeners’ Queries

Could you identify the plant enclosed which was thought to be a kowhai, as it was transplanted as a seedling from beneath one. —P.T. (New Brighton).

The specimens are from Albizia julibrissin which belongs to the same family as the kowhai. It is also known as the silk tree or nemu tree and is rapid growing, attaining an ultimate height of 15-20 feet.

Is there such a thing as a wisteria tree or is this plant just a climber.— Wondering (Christchurch).

The general treatment of wisteria is to train it against a wall or fence, or allow it to drape itself over a pergola or similar structure. It can, however, be grown as a tree by planting against a long strong stake. When it reaches the top the terminal is cut off .4

to induce side growth. These are then shortened to about 6in each spring.

We have a lemon tree which is about four years old. At first it grew well but over the last few seasons it has gradually stopped growing and leaves and fruit are dropping. The treegenerally doesn’t look well. It is growing in a very sunny position in the garden. Can you suggest cause and remedy?—P.P. (Christchurch). I suspect that the trouble is associated with poor drainage and possibly too deep planting. Such factors induce collar rot, a fungus disease to which citrus trees in general are very susceptible. Bad infection, such as when the trunk at ground level is affected right round, cannot be cured. Otherwise a coating of Bordeaux paste may help.
