RACING His Lordship Likely In Ashburton Cup

In His Lordship, Next Please, and Manana, Riccarton will supply three formidable contenders for Ashburton Cup honours tomorrow.

His Lordship was third, Manana fourth, and Next Please fifth in the mile Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton on Tuesday. The Ashburton Cup is run over 11 furlongs and the step up to a middle distance will show each of the trio to advantage. Seasoned racing condition combined with a pull of 131 b in the weights could give His Lordship a slight edge over the top-weight. Next Please. Next Please ran very keenly in several of his middle distance races last season and after only two races on his present campaign he could be left in front almost from the start if there is a lack of early pace. At 11 furlongs, such a de. velopment could brighten the chance of such as His Lordship and Manana, which usu-

ally run in relaxed style, off the pace. New Horses Beau Supreme and the Wingatui-trained Watallan are two newcomers at the meeting, but they are form runners. Beau Supreme’s engagement in the Tinwald Handicap on Tuesday was not continued after he had been re. handicapped 61b for a win at the Otago Hunt meeting. He would have had to carry 8-6 in Tuesday’s race. This time he has 8-5 and his connections have indicated their satisfaction with this slight relief by making the acceptance.

Watallan ran the Hastings horse, Lucky Rebel, to a long neck in the Islington Handicap on the third day of the Grand National meeting. He was a length better than His Lordship, which lost a win-

ning chance by shifting ground when being ridden out Manana is the veteran of the field, but with 7-11 Mr D. W. J. Gould’s good winner should be one of the strongest claimants for the honours if his race on Tuesday did not take his toll. He ran out of racing room ip Tuesday’s race, and R. J. Skelton considered he was an unlucky fourth. If Manana makes the grade a second double for the Tomkinson stable at the meeting will be well within reach. Shipmaster, winner of the corresponding race on Tuesday, is engaged again. This time he will not be opposed by the three-year-old, Hombre, which put up stiffest resistance in the Flying Handicap over the same distance on the first day. Good Third Of those behind Shipmaster and Hombre on Tuesday, easily the best was Pango, which finished third. She missed the start and made a sharp run to a challenging position early in the run home. Not surprisingly she weakened into a gap of two and a half lengths behind the winner and runner-up. Glamis Lad has distinguished himself in fields stronger than this one. He has had time to freshen since his winter campaign, which produced wins at Wingatui and Washdyke and a placed run at Treniham. Six furlongs will be short of Sandbank’s best distance but the handy size of the field should help him to run creditably. FIRST LEG ON-COURSE DOUBLE
