Mountain Safety Essay Contest
The response to an essay competition recently conducted by the Canterbury Mountain Safety Committee had been good and showed that there was an awareness of the need for care in the mountains, the publicity officer for the committee (Mr B. W. Thomas) said yesterday.
The competition was In two sections. The junior section was open to any secondary or intermediate school pupil in Canterbury and Westland, and attracted good entries with a pleasing number from South Westland, said Mr Thomas. The other section was open.
The subjects for the open section were the part national parks played in the future of New Zealand with an opinion on their development, and what could be done to reduce the number of accidents in mountain and bush country. The junior section competitors were asked to suppose they were with a party of trampers lost in rough bush country, lightly clothed and with only a little food. They were asked to say what they would do in this situation.
The prize for the first four place-getters in the junior section is a guided tour of the Arthur’s Pass National Park, with the winner also receiving a pack given by a Christchurch mountain equipment firm. The first four in the open section will go on a guided tour of the Mount Cook National Park. This will possibly include a walk over the Copland Pass to Westland. Mount Cook Airlines, Ltd, will provide free transport to the park. Results were: Open.—Mr W. Taylor, 46 Creyke Road, 1; Mr H. T. Conly, 14 Lingard Street, 2; Mr K. Dawson, 100 Marshland Road, 3; Mrs Elsie Locke, 392 Oxford Terrace, 4. Junior. Peter Goodwin (Burnside High School) 1; Duncan Burns (Christ’s College) 2; Robyn Parkinson (Avonside Girls’ High School) 3; Melanie Parish (Casewood School) 4.
