Christchurch To Hold Wrestling Titles

SYDNEY. Next year’s Australasian amateur wrestling championships will be held in Christchurch and will be attended by all Australian States.
This was announced by the chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Wrestling Union, Mr L. Woods, at Sydney yesterday, at the end of the first Australasian championships.
Mr Woods said that all the State delegates had assured him of their support for the Christchurch fixture, which will be held during the first week in September. New Zealand won the 1968 test series against Australia with a total of 57 points to 49. Junior members of the team scored 31 points to Aus-
tralia’s 27 and the seniors won by 26-22. For the New Zealanders, one of the outstanding performances of the tournament was the success of the Canterbury juniors, L. Ragg, R. Williams and K. McLoughlan, all winning titles in their respective divisions.
The senior middle-weight title winner, J. Downey (Tauranga), outclassed a strong field. Downey has learned all his wrestling from books and has never had a trainer in his six years at the sport The former Australian Olympic wrestler, P. Brown, found N. Scott (Wairarapa) a worthy opponent in the senior feather-weight class and won a hard-fought bout narrowly. T. Milat (Auckland), won the heavy-weight title in the final bout of the tournament when he pinned the Queenslander, A. McCarthy, in the first round. Welshmen Win.— The Welsh Rugby team won the second match of its six-game Argentine tour at Beunos Aires, defeating a combined Argentine prodvincial team, 14-3. The visitors led 6-0 at half-time.
