TOWN HALL SITE CONTRACT LET
Mr M. T. Jackson, the contractor who demolished the Y.M.C.A. building in Hereford Street, has been given the contract to clear the site for the town hall. His tender of $2235 was well within the architect’s estimate, said Mr H. G. Hay, chairman of the Town Hall Committee, last evening. The contract involves the demolition of all buildings on the site of about three acres and some excavation work. The main buildings left on the site are a row of two-storey houses facing Cambridge Terrace and several single-storey buildings on Kilmore Street.
Mr Hay said that he and the committee appreciated the co-operation of all the tenants of buildings on the site. They had readily agreed to vacate their premises although in some cases they had leases. There was still one tenant in occupation but as soon as he moved the demolition contractor would start work, probably on Monday week, and the site should be cleared by the end of the month, Mr Hay said. Tenders for the town hall itself will close on October 9.
