SMELTER SCHEME
No Approval By Japanese Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept 12. The two Japanese aluminium companies involved with Comalco are still awaiting formal approval from the Japanese Government to export capital funds needed to build the Bluff smelter. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) who returned from Tokyo tonight said he had visited the two companies —Showa Denka K.K. and Sumitomo Chemical Company, Ltd—but there had been no indication when approval might be given.
“The project is going ahead but it would be very nice having it all signed and sealed,” Mr Shand said. The matter was being taken up with the Japanese by the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon).
