TAY NINH BATTLE
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, September 12 South Vietnamese paratroopers and marines began a sweep through Tay Ninh city and its suburbs today to root out Communist forces that already may have slipped away under the cover of darkness. Scattered, unconfirmed reports from civilians say that some of the Viet Cong have withdrawn out of the city to the east, according to an American adviser on the scene. An Associated Press correspondent, John Wheeler, re. ported from Tay Ninh that Communist gunners fired 77 mortar shells and rockets into five allied installations in the area. The Communists were believed to be manoeuvring troops around under the cover of the light barrages. Heavy fighting flared in the northernmost provinces and two other serious shellings were reported on the central highlands capital of Pleiku and on an allied airfield in the Mekong Delta.
