PARDON FOR TARUC
(N.ZP.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MANILA, Sept. 12. President Ferdinand Marcos has pardoned the man who led the Communist Huks in their attempt to topple the Philippine Government in the early 19505. A palace announcement says President Marcos was pardoning 165 prisoners to mark his fifty-first birthday, among them Luis Taruc. Taruc—supreme leader of the Huks when the organisation, then said to number 50,000, tried its hardest to overthrow the Government—surrendered in 1954 and was later imprisoned for 12 years for rebellion. In 1958 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. On his release after spending 14f years in prison, Taruc described himself as a Roman Catholic, denied being a Communist and said: “I am a Socialist.”
