New Church At Southbridge
A new $27,000 stone ehurch will be built for the Presbyterian parish of Southbridge—on the site of the present ehureh, which will be demolished. The building project, which will also include a large lounge, three classrooms, a kitchen and toilet facilities, was approved by the Christ church Presbytery at its monthly meeting this week, and it is hoped that work will begin before the end of the year.
The plan to build a new church in the area had been brought forward about two years, because of the considerable damage to the present church during the April 10 u storm, said the convener of “ the presbytery’s property and ' finance committee (Mr A. M. ; Simson) yesterday. The ehurch, which will be s to the right of the main en- :, | trance foyer in the middle of s the building, will provide fj seating for 138 persons, in- | eluding 17 in the choir.
’ To the left of the entrance i foyer there will be a large i lounge. Double glass doors ■ will also lead into the I lounge from outside. ! Next to the lounge there • will be a small robing room 1 and a kitchen, and behind • the church three classrooms. Two of these will be joined : by a folding door, which will • enable them to be made into ’ one room for larger meetings. ■ Mr Simson said that, in ■ addition to the cost of the building, about $2500 would
be needed for furnishings. The main cost would be carpet for the church and the lounge. Most of the furnishings from the old church — including organ, pews, lectern, pulpit, and font would be used in the new building. The drawing by the architect (Mr W. M. Lawry) shows the church as it will appear when completed. The main entrance to the building is in the middle, and the entrance to the lounge on the left.
