COUNCIL ELECTION
Candidates Nominated
The first nomination for the local body elections was lodged with the returning officer (Mr M. B. Hayes) yesterday by Mr J. G. Locke, who Is standing for the City Council. Mr Locke has stood previously, as a Communist Party candidate. The second nomination for the council was lodged by Mr C. E. Cullen. He is standing as an independent. The bulk of the nominations by the Christchurch Citizens’ Association and the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee have been submitted for checking, and the formal nominations are expected to be made today. Nominations will close at noon tomorrow.
As well as the 38 candidates to be nominated by the two parties for the council, Mr Hayes expects to receive several nominations of independents because he has had inquiries for nomination papers. Candidates from both sides have agreed to a “meet the candidates” public meeting on October 3 to be sponsored by the Christchurch Jaycees, who hope that both mayoral candidates, Messrs A. R. Guthrey (Citizens) and J. Mathison, M.P. (Labour) will attend.
