Concern In Cape Town
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, Sept. 11.
The heart used in- Dr Christiaan Barnard’s latest heart transplant was taken without permission of the donor’s relatives, according to the medical superintendent of the Groote Schuur Hospital (Dr J. C. Burger), who said the identity of the donor was not known. But he confirmed that Mr Petrus Smith, aged 52, had received the heart of a black African woman.
Dr L. Munnlk, head of Cape Province’s medical services last night denied reports that the woman had given birth to a baby before she died. Similar denials had earlier been issued by Dr Burger and by Professor Barnard. Medical circles in Cape Town have expressed concern that permission for the operation was not received from the donor's relatives, apparently in direct conflict with a decision taken at a recent Cape Town symposium, at which surgeons agreed that such permission must always be obtained.
