Successor To Kennedy

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 11. Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York today appointed Mr Charles Goodell, a little-known Liberal Republican Congressman, to complete the Senate term of the late Senator Robert Kennedy. Governor Rockefeller said he had chosen Mr Goodell, who is 42, and a five-term Congressman, as “a successor who can give continuity to Senator Kennedy’s efforts in so many areas.” Mr Goodell placed himself on record as favouring a 30day cessation of the bombing of North Vietnam with reassessment on a day-to-day basis after that; approval of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty with the Soviet Union; and confirmation of Judge Abe Fortas as Chief Justice. Mr Goodell will serve the remaining two years of Senator Kennedy’s term unless a Federal court orders a special election before then.
