RACING Riccarton Stablemates Win Double At Ashburton

Time and Tide’s powerful front-running gallop carried him to a narrow but meritorious win in the Tinwald Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. concession double at Ashburton yesterday.

He was one of two runners for Mr D. W. J. Gould, honorary treasurer of the Canterbury Jockey Club. The other was Manana, which was an unlucky fourth. “With a run from the furlong Manana must have won,” commented his rider, R. J. Skelton, after the race.

Manana finished fourth, losing third in the last tew strides to His Lordship, with Skelton sitting quite still on him, unable to find racing room on the inside behind Time and Tide. Time and Tide, ridden by E. J. Didham, won by half a head from Early Dawn, with the fast-finishing His Lordship another half length back.

Favourite When Pharasal was taken out of the field, the Time and Tide-Manana bracket was made favourite, with His Lordship the second fancy after placed runs at the Grand National meeting. The bracket carried $33,810 of the double pool of $115,754. His Lordship finished better than anything else in the race. G. W. Mein had trouble getting the Jekyll gelding into the clear from behind Pretentious, and be felt he had been unlucky. Time and fide led into the last six furlongs from Early Dawn. Manana was next, on the inside, alongside Master Sheeny, and Empire King came next

Chips moved forward wider out. Pango, one of the last away, made a big run in an attempt to loop the field on the home turn, but Shipmaster drove through between her and Hombre and had it safely won at the furlong. A. J. Stokes dropped his hands on Shipmaster in the last two or three strides, so his winning margin of half a length flattered Hombre. Pango was two and a half lengths back third, and four lengths clear of Royal Encounter, one of the slowest away. Shoshone was the best of the others.
