Squash Competition Tied

University and Christchurch II tied for first place with 51 points each when the final round of the division one squash rackets competition was played last evening. In two close encounters, University lost to Christchurch I by two games with matches even at two-all, and Christchurch II defeated Officers by nine games to six with matches also equal at two-all.

It was unfortunate that Officers had to default one match but with R. Taylor in such good form of late, he would almost certainly have won in any case. The result of the competition hinged on the last match of the evening, between L. G. Milne, second for Christchurch I, and C. C. Kissling, of University. Kissling won their last meeting in the Cousins Shield and last evening he needed to win at least two games 'out of five to give his team victory. But it was not to be. Milne found touch early op in the first game and made remarkably few errors. In contrast, Kissling conceded many points with mistakes, although he provided

much to a good match with some determined retrieving and fine driving. Earlier. B. V. Hamilton had set his team on the way to victory with a good display against the spectacular J. St. J. Parson. Parson had some chances to win the first and third games but Hamilton tightened his play nicely, cutting out errors and driving deep to the corner*. For University, A. Naughton and N. Rush were extremely solid third and fourth players and it was a fine effort on the part of both G. Hargreaves and N. W Herd for them to take a game each. As expected. D. J. Triggs won for Officers, but not before he had some anxious moments. His opponent, S. Suckling, showed grand control to take the first game convincingly, often leaving Triggs standing with his short forehand drives. He maintained his form into the second game before he began to tire and Triggs* strong driving began to pay dividends. M. R. Blank took a long time to settle down to. constructive

squash against R. D. Monk, letting two sets slip by and being down 0-5 in the third before he began a grand recovery. Monk had dominated the play but once Blank concentrated on his wall shots and kept his errors down it was a very even match. In third position, T. L. Williams was too severe for J. F. Cotter, keeping constant pressure on his older opponent, thus depriving him of the opportunities to play his normally very effective angled shots. Results: Christchurch I 6, University 4 B. V. Hamilton beat J. St J. Parson, 10-8 9-0, 10-9; L. G. Milne beat C. C. Kissling, 9-4. 10-9, 9-2: G. Hargreaves lost to A. Naughton, 5-9, 7-9. 9-6, 1-9; N. W. Herd lost to N. Rush, 9 3, 1-9, 4-9, 7-9. Christchurch II 6, Officers 4 S. C. Suckling lost to D. J. triggs. 9-2, 7-9, 2-9, 3-9; R. D. Monk lost to M. R. Blank. 10-9, 9-2, 7-9, 6-9, 5-9; T. L. Williams beat J. F. Cotter, 9-6. 9-2, 9-2; R. Taylor beat L. G. Holder, by default.
