Civil-Defence Police
One hundred civil-defence policemen from Christchurch and suburbs, Rangiora and Kaiapoi, will take part in an exercise at the Army range at West Melton on Saturday, September 21. A simulated fire and explosion will be used as a basis for police procedures in communications, crowd cordoning, sudden deaths, identification of victims, and the informing of relatives, said the Christchurch civil-defence police instructor (Sergeant R. G. Gargett). More than 200 civil-defence police, to take over normal police duties while the regular police are engaged in disaster work, are enrolled in the Christchurch area, and undergoing regular lectures and courses.
