Defaulters A register of defaulting consumers who have “disappeared” without paying bills has been compiled by the Electricity Supply Authorities’ Association at its Wellington office. At a meeting of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board yester. day, the secretary-manager (Mr V. G. Mason) said that the list contained 351 names, of which 11 had come from the board. Already, one of the board’s defaulters had been traced through the Franklin Power Board. Antarctic Season The United States Navy’s summer support season in the Antarctic will begin on Tuesday when a Navy Super Constellation carrying an advance party of about 50 lands at Christchurch airport. The men will prepare the airport base for the arrival of the main body on a number of flights from the United States between September 24 and October 5. The commander of the Navy support force (RearAdmiral M. L. Abbot) is expected in the last week of this month. The first Hercules flight of the season from Christchurch to the continent will be made on October 1. New Stamps Two new United Nations stamps will be issued in New Zealand on September 19 to commemorate the World Meteorological Organisation. Printed in Japan, the stamps show a globe and a radar antenna. The values will be 6c and 20c, and the selling price in New Zealand will be 5c and 18c. They are not valid for postage in New Zealand
Bridge Signals New traffic signals on the Waiau bridge on State Highway No. 1 have been working for two days. The district highways engineer of the Ministry of Works (Mr J. Sullivan) said yesterday that the signals were working satisfactorily and to the benefit of motorists. The Waiau bridge is single lane and requires traffic at one end to wait until the bridge is clear. The traffic lights will eliminate bottle-necks at the bridge at holiday time.
