Rovere (playing by invitation), settled to some hard bridge in the Australian open pairs championship on Sunday. The hands were exciting, four of the first 26 deals being slams. At half-time R. Smilde and R. Cummings (New South Wales), led from the composite partnership of E. Rovere (U.S.A.) and E. Cayley (N.S.W.), with Mr and Mrs J. Borin (Victoria) third. In the women’s pairs championship, the Victorian pair, Mesdames M. Johannson and M. Johannson, went to an early lead from Mesdames H. Taylor and M. Morris (New Zealand).
Match-play Coif. —B. Huggett beat J. Panton (Scotland), one-up over 18 holes to win the "News of the World" match-play golf tournament.
