People Leave Lyttelton
People were leaving Lyttelton, and others were talking of leaving because they were not getting the money or the work with the decline in shipping, said Cr J. L. Baines at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. Some - business people already were being affected, he said, and if the position became worse many more businesses would feel the effects. Supporting a proposal by Cr R. M. Priddy for a meeting of interested parties to discuss Lyttelton problems, Cr Baines said: “Everybody has got to get together and try to stop this deterioration, if possible.” “Pessimistic Remarks” Such pessimistic remarks were dangerous, said Cr E. A. Camfield. Current problems were common to all ports, and were symptoms of change. Lyttelton’s drop in port employment was small compared to the decline in other ports, said the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett). A combined meeting could be called after the municipal elections to promote the interests of Lyttelton, said Cr I. G. Henderson. No decision was reached.
