NEGRO’S TRIAL
Conviction Entered (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) OAKLAND - (California), Sept. 9. The Black Panther Party leader, Huey Newton, has been found guilty of the voluntary manslaughter of an Oakland policeman. The jury, led by a Negro foreman, took four days to reach its verdict against Newton, who founded the revolutionary Black Panther Party two years ago, at the age of 24. Newton was charged with murdering a white patrolman, John Frey, in a pre-dawn gun battle on October 28 of last year. The trial, which attracted unusual attention because of its racial overtones, lasted eight weeks. The jury chose the lesser conviction to one of first or second-degree murder. The verdict could mean anything from two to 15 years in prison at the discretion of Judge M. Friedman, whose decision is awaited.
