Policy On Use Of Liquid Gas

(New Zealand Press Association)

BLENHEIM, September 3.

Delegates from most of the gas undertakings that will not be connected to the Kapuni pipeline decided in Blenheim today to prepare a policy on the use of liquid petroleum gas, liquid natural gas, and virgin naphtha at their works—instead of continuing to produce gas uneconomically from coal.

The delegates from some 30 gas undertakings elected a technical committee and a steering committee, both of which will become sub-com-mittees of the Gas Association of New Zealand.

) Recommendations from » these two committees will be ! placed before the executive . of the association to discuss i at the annual meeting in February. Those elected to the committees are: Steering, Messrs G. H. Whimp (Blenheim), E. F. Gorman (Christchurch), W. E Whitney (Dunedin), H. H. Salmon (Gisborne), and L. Appleton (Dannevirke) with Mr Gorman as chairman. Tech--1 nical: Messrs H. E. Bungate ‘ (Blenheim), L. Turner (Gis- ' borne), G. A. Toynbee (Nelson), A. D. Newton (Timaru), and E. Ardon (Wellington), 1 with Mr Newton as chairman. r The chairman of the Gas > Association (Mr M. Kennedy, b of Wellington), urged that an ■ independent economic survey of the use of liquid petroleum • or natural gases should be s commissioned by those gas f undertakings which will not i- get natural gas direct from i the Kapuni pipeline. 1 “We all believe that liquid s petroleum gas is the salvation of the gas industry whether b it comes from Kapuni, Bass b Strait or Marsden Point,” Mr J Kennedy said. “If it is, then s we must be able to produce i gas at a cheaper cost and sell f profitably at a cheaper price.” The critical factor was what b liquid petroleum gas would . cost delivered at gasworks, i Questions on the cost of :■ bottles, terminal costs, quan- ;• tity, tank waggons and admin- * istration were involved. There i were no quick answers to i. these questions, he said.
