Lama Of Riccarton

Sir, —Your denunciation of the claim of Sidney Mead to be a reincarnated lama may be fair enough in itself but your remarks and implications are definitely unfair and most unwarranted. Mr Mead and his wife left for Auckland because a son had been seriously injured. Mr and Mrs Mead are a pleasantly eccentric elderly couple with one aim in life—to help alleviate suffering whether in mind or in body. Added to this, they have certain spiritual beliefs which they do not force on anyone. Whether Mr Mead was a lama or not is not important to anyone other than himself. We all practise our little escapes from reality in some shape or form. One thing is quite certain: Mr Mead is not in this country for monetary gain. On the contrary, he has given and given again since they came to Christchurch and this fair city has so far treated him abominably.— Yours, etc., ONE OF HIS RETINUE IN CHRISTCHURCH. August 26, 1968.
