Food Poisoning Cases

Five cases of suspected food poisoning, all in the Paparua County, were investigated last week, said the supervising District Inspector of Health in Christchurch (Mr J. B. Snoad). In one case fish and chips were again suspected when staphylococcal toxin probably caused a man’s illness. Another man who was ill had eaten a raw coconut and it was thought that the meat of the nut might have been contaminated after it was opened. The man suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea for 24 hours. The illness was probably caused by salmonella.

Three cases in one family were considered to have been caused by contamination of the water in a private well by effluent from a septic tank which became blocked a month previously. Members of the family had experienced bouts of enteritis since then but after discontinuing the use of the private well last Monday their illness ceased. There was one case of infective hepatitis in the Christchurch district last week. It affected a woman in her thirties in the city area.
