AIR-FARES REPORT

“Not A Scenic Flight”

(N.Z. Press Association

WELLINGTON, Sept. 1

A report on Friday on National Airways Corporation fares applying on the Friendship service across the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Hokitika and return gave the impression that fares were unduly high because it is a scenic route, said the deputy general manager of the corporation (Mr L. L. Ford) today.

The Christchurch-Hokitika-Christchurch Friendship service was not being introduced to provide a scenic flight between Wellington and Christchurch via Nelson, Westport and Hokitika, Mr Ford said. It was a direct air link between Hokitika and Christchurch, which was the purpose of the route. “The fares established between Hokitika and Christchurch ($6.50) and Westport and Christchurch (812) are as low as they can reasonably be, taking into account the route which must be followed by the aircraft over this terrain,” he said.
