HERCULES DELAYED

Cold Snap At McMurdo

Two United States Navy Hercules were unable to fly from Christchurch to the Antarctic last night because the weather was too cold at the Williams Field ski-way. A temperature of minus 70 degrees was recorded at McMurdo Station. This is five degrees lower than is considered safe for flights by Hercules. The first Hercules was to have left Christchurch at midnight and the second at 1 a.m. The flights have been postponed to 3.30 p.m. and 4 p.m. today. It is not expected that the planes will remain on the ice much more than three hours.

About 40001 b of fresh provisions on board the'two aircraft had to be taken off and placed in refrigerators until today.

On the aircraft will be 13 scientists who will carry out research on the continent for a brief period. The main summer support season will open on October 1. Yesterday Scott Base also had a low temperature. Between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. minus 70.15 degrees, or 102.15 degress of frost, was recorded.
