A Doctor For Every 659 In N.Z.

There was one registered doctor for every 659 persons in New Zealand in the year ended June 30,1966, and 4074 doctors on the Medical Register, says a report on health trends and services issued by the Department of Health.

Since 1951, there has been a steady improvement in the ratio of doctors to population, said the report. In that year, there was one doctor for every 791 of population.

In 1966, 99 New Zealandqualified doctors were added to the Medical Register, along with 73 who had qualified in other countries. During 1966, 76 doctors were removed from the register. On March 31, 1966, there were 4291 registered nurses employed in public hospitals in New Zealand, along with 9201 other nurses, making a total of 13,492. These figures have shown a steady improvement since 1956, when there were 2743 registered nurses, and 5844 other nurses in public hospitals, a total of 8587.
