ADVERTISING ON TV

Night Rates Up 51 p.c.

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Sept. 2.

New peak-period advertising rates for television, to be introduced next April, were announced today.

The N.Z.B.C. said that advertising rates for prime time (from 6.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.) would increase by 51 per cent from April 1. At the same time, afternoon rates will be decreasd by 21 per cent over-all. The new rates will mean that a 30-second spot on all four channels between 6.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. will cost $740 instead of the present $490. Devaluation is one of the reasons given by the N.Z.B.C. for the increase. The corporation’s commercial manager, Mr R. Shaw, said tonight that rising cost of operation as much as anything else was the reason for the higher rates. He said the N.Z.B.C. had managed to hold its rates steady for two years.
