THRILL FOR LONDONERS

(N Z.P A .-Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON, September 2.

They came from all over Britain yesterday to ride the silver ghost train snaking its way under the streets of London.

Twenty thousand people joined in the thrill of the first trips on the capital’s first all-automatic underground train.

Captain Harold Coombes, aged 75, a retired naval officer, was one of the first aboard for a sentimental journey. Sixty-two years ago he travelled on the city’s first subway.

The great occasion yesterday was the inauguration of the first stage of the £Bom Victoria Line, one of the most highly-automated underground systems in the world.
