$6OO Raised From Trek

About $6OO was raised by 110 persons, mostly children, who took part in an 11-mile sponsored trek from Kaiapoi to Christchurch on Saturday. The trek was organised by the Kaiapoi sub-branch of the Save the Children Fund.

The money will be used to help the Save the Children Fund support a vocational training centre in Pusan, Korea, where children from beggar boys’ and beggar girls’ homes also run by the fund, are trained for semiskilled positions. Walkers in the trek started at 9 a.m. at the corner of Ohoka Road, and the Main North Road and the first persons had reached the finish,

opposite the totem pole in Harper Avenue in two hours and a half. The last persons to reach the finish took three hours and 40 minutes.

Each person was sponsored at the rate of 5c a mile. The most money raised by one person was $52 collected by Mrs J. Lange, a member of I the sub-branch of the fund. John Krijt, who raised $11.55, won the prize for the most money raised by a person over nine and his sister Jacequeline Krijt, aged eight, won the prize for the highest amount raised by a person under nine. Her amount was $7. Ellwood Montague and Andrew Marwick were equal first home in the boys’ section and Charlene Sullivan was the first girl home. The first woman home was Mrs M. Walker.

The president of the sub-

branch (Mrs A. C. Peters) said yesterday that the fund was grateful to the Kaiapoi | Jaycees for helping to organise the trek.

She thanked those persons who gave donations along the route, Christchurch and Kaiapoi businessmen, and the children's parents for support of the project. Mrs Peters asked that the sponsored amounts of money i be delivered if possible to'

Mesdames J. Skelton, L. Winder, or herself, or they would be collected if this was not convenient. The photograph shows Ellwood Montague and Charlene Sullivan being welcomed by the Mayor of Christchurch (Sir George Manning) and the president of the North Canterbury i branch of the fund (Miss I M. G. Havelaar).
