SWORD-MAKING IN JAPAN.—These photographs were taken at a sword-making works of an old Tokyo company. LEFT: As the blade takes shape it is heated and cooled many times, giving it strength and temper. MIDDLE: The long, tedious sharpening of the blade by whetstone held in place by a specially-shaped wooden vice beneath the gloved foot of the swordsmith. The blade is now approaching its finishing stage. RIGHT: When finished, the blades are wrapped in cloth scabbards while hafts and guards are added with a wooden mallet tipped with hard rubber to avoid marking them.
