WORKERS ON RELIEF
’More Pay Than Permanents’ (N.Z. Press Association! TAUMARUNUI, Sept. 1. Government relief workers in the Taumarunui district are earning more than permanent county employees and farm workers, it was said at a meeting of the Taumarunui County Council. “There are more than 80 men employed by the Ministry of Works and Lands and Survey Department on temporary relief work in the Taumarunui district. Ministry of Works men receive 52.50 a fortnight more than men doing similar work for the Taurmarunui council.” said the county engineer, Mr R. C. Briggs. Men employed on a casual relief basis by the Lands and Survey Department received between $5 and $6 a fortnight more than permanent farm employees. Cr B. H. Jones told the meeting.
The matter will be referred to the New Zealand Counties Association for comment and investigation.
