HEREFORD BRINGS $3750 AT TEMUKA

A North Island buyer paid $3750 for a three - year - old stud bull at the South Island Hereford bull sale at Temuka on Friday.

This was the highest price yet paid for a bull at this annual fixture. Offered on account of J. L. Falconer and Company, of Patearoa, Central Otago, it was purchased by the Farmers’ Stud Stock Company, acting for an undisclosed Palmerston North buyer.

Buyers from Otago and Southland again bought extensively. Several bulls were purchased by Canterbury hillcountry breeders, and other lots were purchased for North Auckland and Feilding. Both the aggregate and the average were well in excess of last year’s figures. Of the 49 bulls offered 37 were sold at auction for $26,075 Excluding the top priced bull—a stud animal—the average for 36 run bulls was $620.

At last years sale 41 run bulls were sold at auction for an average of $390. Buyers at yesterday’s sale showed a marked preference for horned bulls. The six lots which realised $lOOO or more were horned beasts. Top price for run bulls was $l5OO for a horned Hereford from D. and W. R. Malloch, of Morton Mains, Southland. Another from the same vendors realised $lOOO. / C. W. Turnbull, of Salisbury. Timaru, sold a horned bull at $l2OO, the buyer being the North Auckland Farmers’ Co operative, as agents, while Fal coner and Company obtained the same price for a bull which took first prize in the led two-year-old class.

The price of $l2OO was also paid for one of four bulls offered by Heathstock Downs, Ltd, of Hawarden. The bull was one of a pair which won the first prize in the unled class. The other bull was passed at auction at $9OO, but was sold privately later. The sale was slow in the early stages, and in view of the market for beef the sale was regarded as satisfactory rather than buoyant.
