WINFREUX WINS STAKES EVENT

(N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. The great welght-for-age specialist, Winfreux, stole the limelight of Australian racing at the week-end by winning the Freeway Stakes at Moonee Valley, but bookmakers were more interested in the form of two New Zealand-bred horses. Fileur and Weidersehn firmed in betting for the A.J.C, spring double, tjie Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps, after racing at Moonee Valley and Rosehill respectively. Weidersehn (Le Filou—Ta Ta) was made joint favourite for the 13 furlongs Metropolitan Handicap on October 7, after a runaway win in a 10 furlongs event at Rosehill, his fourth successive victory.

Fileur, also by Le Filou, caught the eye with a big run in the Freeway Stakes at Moonee Valley, although beaten by Winfreux.

Kathey’s Son, a stablemate of Fileur. was last in the Freeway Stakes, and his trainer, C. S. Hayes, said he would not go to Sydney.

Weidersehn won the Seaforth Handicap at Rosehill by four lengths from Aveniam with By Gee third.

Winfreux’s win in the Free way Stakes was the highlight ol the day's racing at Moonee Valley. The great galloper won by

two lengths from Fileur with Magic Ruler a neck away third. His owner, Mr V. Hodge, said Winfreux could start in the Epsom Handicap but Fileur attracted all the big race attention, with bookmakers clipping his odds from 8/1 to 5/1 favourite.

Winfreux, better-known as a middle-distance star in more recent months, easily defeated a very strong sprint field over the six furlongs after leading all the way.

In Adelaide, Testify, a New Zealand-bred gelding by Test Case, showed smart form for the Port Adelaide Guineas on September 14, when he won the one mile Holdfast Handicap at Morphettville by four lengths.

A winner on the course last season, Testify had come hotne strongly for/minor places in recent races. Testify is trained by J. B. Cummings.
