Torch Now In Spain
(N Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright/ BARCELONA. Ship sirens hooted and thousands of Spaniards packing the streets of Barcelona applauded the Olympic torch as it arrived from Italy on Saturday on a 780-mile journey through Spain on its way to the Olympic Games at Mexico City. It was the first time the Olympic flame had travelled through Spain in the history of the modern Olympic Games. Onlookers scattered flower petals under the feet of the first Spanish athlete to carry the torch. Five thousand doves were released in welcome, and mounted guards in gala, dress escorted the athlete up the tree-lined Rambles Avenue. The flame will be carried on an 11-day journey to the tiny port of Palos, in southwest Spain, from where Christopher Columbus sailed to discover America.
