North American doctors today carried out their fourth heart-transplant operation In less than 24 hours, including a surgical “spectacular” involving the transplant of the heart, lung and kidneys of a woman donor to four different male recipients. The multiple transplant procedure was carried out al Houston’s Methodist Hospital by a world-famous specialist, Dr Michael Debakey.
Two other heart-trans-plant operations were performed today, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Palo Alto,. California; and another was carried out last night in Montreal. The seven recipients are all listed as in satisfactory condition.
The multiple donor in the Houston operations was Mrs Nelva Lou Hernandez, aged 20, who died from a gunshot wound. In addition, doctors removed Mrs Hernandez’s corneas and placed them in an eye bank for use in future transplant operations.
