Eight titles at Avondale

knowledge often ■plays a part in the winning of a golf tournament, and F. W. Roberts had plenty of this to call on when he finished first in the. South Island championship on his home course, Avondale, last week-end.

Roberts has played at Avondale for 22 years, and during this time he has won the club championship on eight occasions—one more than the former record of seven wins set by J. Millard.

He has become almost a permanent fixture in Avondale’s Woodward Cup team, and has captained the side for many seasons. A tough opponent in the lower half of the order, ■toberts is one of the few men playing senior inter-club golf in Canterbury with more than 100 matches to his credit. Roberts’s success in the South Island championship embellished his family’s sporting record. His wife, formerly Miss Ola Hobson, was the winner of the first New Zealand women's medley swimming championship, in 1947. In the same year she was the Canterbury champion at 100 yd and 220 yd freestyle, as well as 100 yd medley. Mrs Roberts has been active in the Royal Life-Saving Society for many years and has served both as an administrator and as an examiner.
