Local Arrangements

Organisers of the Save the Children Fund Rice Bowl appeal in Christchurch are confident that in spite of the economic conditions the public would show a desire to help unfortunate children. Arrangements for the appeal are well in hand, says a report presented to the monthly meeting yesterday.

“We are very grateful for the excellent work done by five of the Round Table clubs in Christchurch Christchurch Central, Christchurch North, Shirley, Bryndwr, and Biccarton.

“The committee has packed envelopes for delivery to 70 schools and distributed meal tickets to a further 40 schools. “With each parcel went also a selection of suitable maps, illustrations and literature prepared by another group of voluntary workers.” Of the 80,000 envelopes.

62,000 went to schools for children to place in private letter boxes. Some 18,000 envelopes were posted to other areas where distribution by schools is not convenient.

The counting and parcelling of 40,000 meal tickets was done by a young volunteer.

Letters concerning the appeal have been sent to churches, lodges and various clubs as well as to a large number of business firms, and already some response has been shown.
