Objections To Petrol Station Application

Objections from the Regional Planning Authority and nearby service stations were heard when Caltex Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, asked a Paparua County Council town-planning sub-committee for a specified departure to allow a garage and service station to be established at 295-297 Main South Road, Sockburn. The County Engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg) said the proposed site, zoned residential, adjoined the commercial zone shops at the corner of the Main South Road and Garvins Road. Previous applications for extension of commercial zoning over the two sections had been refused by the council. Mr R. D. Harrison, the company’s Canterbury-West-land manager, said that well laid out service stations were needed on main routes. The proposed station would fill an immediate need. He presented a petition in support of the application. Mr L. F. Kirk, 291 Main South Road, supported the application. While his wife, Mrs J. Kirk, opposed it. Both she and Mr A. R. Leathwick. 293 Main South Road, asked that residential zoning be retained. Mr F. S. Robinson said the

regional authority objected because it did not want extension of commercial use in “a solid residential zone,” and if the application were granted, it would adversely affect main road traffic. There were two service stations within one-third of a mile. Objections were also made by Simmonds Service Station and Wigram Services, Ltd, both on the Main South Road. Car Sales Mr A. M. Rhodes asked for a specified departure to allow him to have a used car business at 53 Buchanans Road, in an industrial C zone. The Regional Planning Authority objected on traffic grounds, and claimed that a departure would amount to a zoning change. x Mr B. A. Philpot said his home was opposite. A wrecking business had been established and to allow car sales would lower the value of his property. No objections were lodged to a specified departure request from J. F. A. Fox and Company, Ltd, to have a used car sales business in conjunction with an existing motor workshop and service station at 117-119 Main South Road. In each case, the committee will make' a recommendation to the council.
