Czechoslovakia
Sir, —It is a relief to hear that so few lives have been lost and so little damage done to property in the recent bid for liberty. Czechoslovakia is a conquered country which has known a very advanced political and cultural standard, so they miss what they once had. However, some form of federalism is required under present trade conditions. Any political system which cannot function with an official opposition and free press is nothing short of immature.—Yours, etc , E. J. FREEMAN. August 29, 1968.
Sir,—Last week I received a letter from Senator McGovern, written just before Russia’s attack on Czechoslovakia, in which he sounded hopeful of achieving a moderation of American policy in Vietnam. We have since seen a more moderate policy platform toughened during a Presidential briefing on Czechoslovakia and a convention debate lost to hard-liners by a 40-60 vote. It is Russian action, therefore, that has both helped to sabotage what many, including myself, have tried to do on behalf of peace in Vietnam, and to strengthen neo-Nazism in West Europe, contrary to “Vostock's” claims.—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. August 29, 1968.
