Rise In Beef Bull Prices

Prices for beef bulls Increased sharply at the fifth annual show and sale of the Marlborough Pedigree Beef Breeders' Association. The average price for the 37 Hereford and Aberdeen Angus bulls sold at auction was $550, which represented a 50 per cent rise on last year’s sale when the average return for 28 bulls was $366. The 37 bulls sold today re turned $20,350. There were insufficient bulls to satisfy the demand.

Buyers attended from Raetihi to Kurow and there was a strong local demand. When a bull was passed in at auction it was quickly sold as the sale continued. For 19 Herefords sold at auction the average return for bulls ranging from $3lO to $BOO was almost $560. This was almost 50 per cent better than last year. H. E. Williams gained the top price of the sale and of the Hereford section with his Wai dale’s Boloney which was placed first in the Hereford section and also judged the champion of all breeds and winner of the Alfalfa-Delta trophy. For four bulls ranging from $525 up. Mr Williams averaged $666. With sales between $545 and $720, S. J. Chaffey averaged $655 and J. F. Cooper. Ltd. with 10 bulls, from $3lO to $745, averaged $558.50. In the Aberdeen Angus section 18 bulls realised from $360 to $7OO and these averaged more than $5lB. Here the average level of prices was about 57 per cent up on last year. The top price went to G. R. Hocquard, whose Elegance 13th of Riverlands was sold to a local buyer, N. Richmond, for $7OO. Two of the main vendors were A. L. Ferguson, Ltd, who had six bulls ranging from $4OO to $640 and averaging $540, and R. P. Waddy, who averaged $462.50 for six making from $360 to $675.
